Biography
A member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 2003, Rep. Scott Petri brings a legal career spanning more than 20 years and his devotion to public service to the job of serving the citizens of the 178th Legislative District and the Commonwealth.

As a lawmaker, Petri has exhibited both the experience and drive necessary to address important issues facing Pennsylvania and its citizens. He strives to keep state and local property taxes under control; find ways to deliver state government services more efficiently and effectively; provide for greater transparency in government; and plan for controlled, sustainable land use. In addition, he has worked toward achieving much-needed medical malpractice reform and has sought to build coalitions among communities in his legislative district.

Since taking office, Petri has pushed for legislation to establish an Office of Children’s Ombudsman to prevent child abuse in Pennsylvania. His bill has the overwhelming support of district attorneys, child and victims’ advocates, and the medical community statewide.

In 2012, Petri, who has served on the House Appropriations Committee since 2005, became vice chairman of the committee. This leadership role provides him with greater oversight and responsibility in determining how taxpayer money is spent.

Petri serves on other House committees, including Liquor Control, Local Government, and Health, and he chairs the Life Sciences Caucus. He was appointed chairman of the Life Sciences Advisory Council Task Force, which is responsible for producing a white paper on industry goals for bioscience-focused economic development and job creation in Pennsylvania.

Petri is an attorney with Begley, Carlin & Mandio, LLP, where he focuses his practice on real estate matters, banking, wills, estates and municipal law. Petri previously served as chairman of Upper Makefield Township’s planning commission, a member of the Joint Municipal Zoning Council, chairman of the Traffic Impact Fee Committee and solicitor to the planning commission.

A graduate of Villanova University School of Law (1985), Petri also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Washington and Jefferson College (1982) in Washington, PA., and is a graduate of Downingtown Senior High School.

Memberships in professional organizations include the Pennsylvania Bar Association; Pennsylvania Supreme Court; U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania; and U.S. Circuit Court, Third Circuit.

Petri is a member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and as a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Heritage Society. He also serves on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Petri is active in numerous local charities, hospitals and universities. He enjoys mentoring young people as a basketball coach and in his role as legislator. He is a member of the St. Mary Hospital advisory board, and is an elder in the Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church. He resides in New Hope with his wife, Ellen and their son, Drew.
